Give them an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere,
a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works.
from the Book of Common Prayer, Baptismal Covenant
The words quoted above form part of the prayer over newly baptized persons. These gifts allow us, disciples of Jesus Christ, to abide in God as God abides in us. This is our first and most important relationship. As with any relationship, a relationship with God needs to be cultivated. We each need to spend some time in openness to hearing God’s voice and guidance in our minds and hearts. One way to cultivate this relationship is through contemplative prayer. Contemplating Scripture is one spiritual practice that may help to cultivate this relationship. St. Christopher’s will begin to offer an opportunity to take this rest in God. On the
first Wednesday of every month, starting September 6th at 6 P.M., we will gather a contemplative prayer group. We will start with a brief form of vocal prayer, then pray with a piece of Scripture using lectio divina (holy reading).
